Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation
system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building,
maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages
the world’s longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world’s widest tunneling project.
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two motivated and hardworking individuals to fill the role of Highway Maintenance Worker 2
for the Region-wide Maintenance and Traffic Control Crew located in Wenatchee, WA. Primary duties will be performing
a multitude of maintenance tasks and traffic control to provide the safe travel of goods, services, and people by way of
maintaining state highways, roadsides, infrastructure, and right of way. The Highway Maintenance Worker is responsible
for repairing roadways and roadway shoulders, performing snow and ice removal, establishing and maintaining culverts
and catch basins, removing debris, maintaining roadside vegetation, and providing traffic control for these operations.
What to Expect
Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, this position is tasked to work alongside and assist other
WSDOT workgroups with traffic control operations, roadway maintenance, and general labor in assigned areas.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will:
? Proficiently operate a variety of Class A highway equipment safely and efficiently.
(May be required to operate Class B and Class C equipment for roadway maintenance activities as needed).
? Follow traffic control plans and place signing, cones, barricades, and other traffic control equipment; and flag traffic
within the work zone, which requires standing for long periods of time.
? Perform winter maintenance to include operating dump trucks and sanders, application of anti-icing compounds to
road surface with truck mounted equipment, and maintain stockpile sites.
? Repair and maintain drainage facilities and structures, roadway surfaces, roadside hardware, guardrails, fences,
shoulders, and right-of-way; this includes working with hot asphalt reaching 350° Fahrenheit by shoveling, raking,
and hauling, etc.
? Assist with permanent pavement markings, striping, painting; and removal of existing markings; and perform traffic
control for these functions as needed.
? Report any signage illegally posted, encroachments, or other irregularities on the highway; and remove roadway
obstructions.
? Perform minor preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on equipment and tools; as well as, other general
labor and worksite cleanup.
? Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
? High School Diploma or GED (must be 18 years of age at time of appointment).
? Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with N (cargo/tanker) endorsement without airbrake restrictions and
current medical card.
? These positions are eligible for an in-training opportunity that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This
allows you to progress through the Highway Maintenance Worker series, and achieve the goal class of a Highway
Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, or Highway
Maintenance Worker 2 level depending on qualifications, skills, and abilities.
o Highway Maintenance Worker 1 ($38,376.00 – $46,452.00 Annually): One (1) year of experience in
highway engineering, highway maintenance, operating a truck (26,000 GVW or above), or operating heavy
equipment while performing work such as landscaping, farming, forestry, construction, or other related field.
o Highway Maintenance Worker 2 ($46,452.00 – $56,568.00 Annually): Two (2) years highway
maintenance, roadway construction, operating a truck (26,000 GVW or above), or operating heavy
equipment while performing work; such as, landscaping, farming, forestry, construction, or other related
experience; OR one (1) year experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 with completed In-Training
Plan. Demonstrated experience operating heavy equipment used in roadway maintenance.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
? Flagger Certification
? First Aid Certification
Important Notes
? Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and next to moving traffic. This position also
requires traversing uneven and steep terrain, with work heights above 50 feet, over water, at ground level, or in
confined spaces.
? Employees may have to travel to off-site meetings, attend trainings, and travel to work sites with occasional
overnight stays as work dictates.
? This position will be exposed to hazardous materials and waste, such as herbicides, gasoline, diesel, solvents, oils,
lubricants, paint, cleaners, asphalt; as well as, possible exposure to human waste, needles, and chemicals.
? This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety

Oral Communication Skills – You will be required to communicate effectively with people at every level of the organizations – campers, fellow staff, camp directors, and parents.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving – You will be challenged to think on your feet to resolve a myriad of issues from the health and safety of children to how to get 6-10 campers to make it to a meal on time.
Interpersonal and Leadership Skills – You will model professionalism and compassion by managing a group of campers, while contributing to the growth and development of each individual participant.
Collaborative Skills – You will receive on-the-ground, practical, real life training in how to work with a team and help build the culture of your camp community.
Creativity – You will develop innovative and fun ways to engage an audience of two to 200 and implement alternate plans when faced with unexpected changes to the daily routine.

Salary includes room, board, and free use of laundry facilities (including laundry detergent).

Responsibilities
? Lead and guide a group of campers each week, providing them with personalized attention and experiences.
? Lead and teach a variety of age appropriate camper planned activities including but not limited to: boating; outdoor skills; cooking and overnights; hiking; crafts; games; nature activities; singing; and general camp program.
? Be on time and participate in camp events, activities and meals.
? Plan, participate in, and evaluate the program designed for individual campers, small groups, and unit groups, and all-camp activities that will follow the Camp Fire philosophy of camping and the objectives of Camp Sweyolakan.
? Participate in program planning for the unit with the help of campers, unit staff, and Unit Director.
? Participate with campers in all group, unit and all-camp activities.
? Instruct campers in rules, safety regulations and emergency procedures, i.e., fire drills, evacuating camp, etc.
? Be on time and participate in camp events, activities, and meals.
? Ensure campers’ needs are met to include medications, diet, sleep, hygiene, showers, etc.
? Be knowledgeable about the health, eating habits, and diets of campers.
? Be responsible for heading a table in the Dining Hall, providing adequate supervision, and following Dining Hall procedures.
? Observe campers for signs of illness or fatigue and report to the Camp Nurse.
? Supervise and assist campers in unit kapers, and overall cleanliness of camp.
? Assist in planning all-camp activities as scheduled with the Unit Director or assigned staff member.
? Complete all session paperwork; this includes but is not limited to: bead sheets, post cards, evaluations, record sheets, and inventories.
? Attend staff training and assist with the opening and closing of camp.
? Notify appropriate camp personnel of maintenance and safety needs, as necessary.
? Responsibly carry out bus and boat duty, as needed.
? Temporarily fill other positions in camp and assist with camper supervision in assigned unit when not focused on primary duties.
? Other duties as assigned by the Unit Director.

Basic Requirements
General requirements of all staff include: Current CPR and first aid certifications (may obtain during staff training); plan, participate in, and evaluate the program designed for individual campers, small groups, and unit groups, and all-camp activities that will follow the Camp Fire philosophy of camping and the objectives of Camp Sweyolakan; visual, physical and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the camp setting; abide by health and safety rules to ensure well-being of campers and staff at all times; prepare the necessary reports, inventories, and records as assigned; plan for and carry out the care and maintenance of the equipment and facilities assigned; know the basic facts about the program of Camp Fire; display a willingness to accept a reasonable share of camp responsibilities, and other duties as assigned; be responsible for table in the Dining Hall, providing adequate supervision and follow Dining Hall procedures; responsibly carry out bus and boat duty, as needed; prepare for and participate in the meetings and conferences of the staff; bring complaints or problems directly to Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director; be on time and participate in camp events, activities and meals; abide by established procedures and policies covered during staff training, in Sweyolakan Employee Practices and Guidelines, and Code of Conduct; ability to assist campers and staff in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels), and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff; ability to observe and evaluate appropriate camper behavior, to enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and to apply appropriate behavior management techniques; possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
